Welcome
to another issue of the "Your Journey
to Freedom" newsletter.
Well, another
week has come and gone. WOW where does all
the time go. Crikey, I will be old and grey before you know
it. Hang on… to late, it's already happened!
As promised,
this week you will be learn a valuable
lesson… and unlike me… it won't cost you a red cent.
If you
missed last weeks issue you can read it here:
http://www.profitunity21.com/ezine/002
Today you
get the chance to learn and benefit from my dead
set, totally spaced out, brain explosion, where I tried to
take a little short cut to make my a tad easier.
Now we all
know… what's best for the Google Gods, is
particularly good for us mere mortals :-). Trouble is
though, if you earn their wrath… you may as well bash
you
head up against the nearest brick wall, believe me, it's
less painful. <ouch>
You'll find
out that I virtually waste 3 months of my
time, that I could ill afford, working on a project that
was doomed to failure before I even started.
This is
a great lesson for anyone creating or updating
their website, and only emphasis the necessity to carry out
due diligence prior to making or carrying out any
alterations to your website.
Anyway the
full story is listed under this week's feature
article for your information (and amusement) <grin>
We have
also included a new topic "Tip Time" which is a
section that will provide time saving tips to help you with
your venture or everyday life. If you have any tips you
would like to share, please send them to:

What
Not to Do if You Want a High Search Engine Ranking
By David Isaacs
Recently I carried out an update to my site at
http://www.profitunity21.com
by including new content and
updating the design, layout and improving keyword
optimisation to further increase website traffic by gaining
a higher search engine ranking.
Now as I
was developing a content site, there were going
to be quite a few pages on my website. So to reduce my
workload as much as possible I thought it would be a great
time saving idea to create a webpage template.
All I would
have to do is create one single webpage in
Dreamweaver, save this as a template and then use this as
the base for all the other webpages on my site. This way,
not only would they be all identical in design, it would
save me hours of time, by not having to create a new
webpage for each page on the site, over and over again.
This also
meant that if the design of the webpages needed
to altered, all that needed to be done was to alter the
template. This would then automatically change all the
other pages that linked to the template. Thus saving heaps
of time by not having to manually alter each webpage.
Virtually
all I had to do was change the content on the
page and save it as what ever I wanted to.
Wow…
I thought I was a fair dinkum genius. Yeah right!
Now the
trouble was that by using this method, Dreamweaver
creates a locked, un-editable region on the webpage
template. This is designed to ensure that you don't alter
the basic design of the page by error and to allow any
alterations to the template to be affected. The only part
of the page you can change is the un-editable regions of
the webpage, which is basically the body of the page.
Not long
after completing the update to the website (it
took me a few months) I decided to obtain some feedback
from an expert in the field of search engine optimization,
just to confirm I was on the right track with my new site.
Listed below
is the expert reply that I received in
response to my question, which by the way was published in
the "Ask the Search Engine Guru" section of the Web
Gold
newsletter published by Terry Dean on 13th August, 2003.
To say I
was surprised would be the understatement of the
decade. After reading the reply, I was like a stunned
mullet, my jaw hit the floor like a bad joke and I had this
weird numb feeling down my left arm. Dead set, I was
speechless! (My kids thought that was great)
Contrary
to popular belief, I am not a masochist, and as
such I have not included this article here to embarrass
myself, although no doubt it will <grin>.
Hopefully,
you will be able to learn from my mistake (a
pretty good one too, might I add) so that you can increase
your chances of success and expedite your journey to
freedom!
Read and
enjoy…
Bob,
I have recently
completed my content website and as there
are quite a number of pages, I created a template with un-
editable areas to make it more efficient.
This way
if I need to make some alterations, I only have
to change the template page and all the other pages would
update automatically.
However,
as the locked area in the template includes all
the meta tags (description, keywords etc) will the search
engine spiders still be able to gain access to these areas
and hence index my pages?
If you need
to check out my site it can be found at
http://www.profitunity21.com
Cheers
Dave Isaacs
ANSWER:
Yes, Dave,
the spiders will be able to find and index the
pages within your site.
However
------
I completely
understand why you did it that way, as you
said, to be more efficient. The problem is you made it more
efficient for YOU and not for the spiders, or more
importantly, your visitors.
As for the
spiders, yes, they CAN index your pages, but
why? Why index 200 pages with the same titles, meta
descriptions and keywords tags?
Granted,
the content may be different enough to justify
good placements under more specific keyword searches, but
put yourself in the shoes of the search engine. What does
200 pages with identical tags and titles look like to you?
Over-repetition
of keywords and title tags maybe?
Spam tricks maybe?
The meta
keyword tag won't do much one way or the other
with most major spidering engines, (they do still play an
important role in placement on most directories and many
smaller engines), but the title tag is important.
Also, to
a human editor considering your acceptance into a
directory, the repetitive tags and titles are going to send
up spam warning flags and may make getting in more
difficult.
As for your
visitors, your biggest mistake is in disabling
the back button on virtually every page of your site. This
may save you a lot more time than you expected because with
the identical titles on so many pages and the similar look
of all the pages, it is going to be very easy for the
visitor to become lost and the back button not working on a
site is the kiss of death.
It won't
be long before your lack of placements in major
search engines, the wrong placements for the wrong keywords
in search engines due to what you call efficiency, and the
navigational problems the few visitors you do get have to
deal with, its going to lose you the viability of the
entire site and you will have little choice but to abandon
the whole thing.
Sorry to
be so harsh, but you have chosen your desire to
not have to put forth more effort than you absolutely have
to, over the ability of your customers to find their way
around and feel comfortable enough to want to become your
customer.
You obviously
don't mind doing the work as evidenced by
the large volume of content, why skimp on the parts that
can actually get the top placements and make the sale?
If you want
individual pages indexed because they contain
unique content that is important to the visitor, then make
the pages unique. If they aren't unique enough or important
enough for you to care to spend the extra time, you can be
sure your visitors or the search engines won't care either.
See You
at the Top
